Rating: 7/10 Children-YA fantasy
I love the idea of this book, but the execution is a little off. Set in a not quite England of the past, the main character is both likable and flawed. She struggles with moral dilemmas, and with her friends’. She has a lot of personality, and must deal with the inherent racism she is surrounded by. The idea of combining both fairies and automatons is brilliant, but the author doesn’t expand on these steampunk elements of the story, much to my disappointment. Instead, she focuses on her distinctly Jane Eyre influenced character, making me beg for more on the backstory of the world the characters live in.
