6/10 book, YA, fantasy
The plot of Sister’s Red is fairly good. It’s a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, but with some tweaks; it’s set in the modern day, there are two ‘hoods’ and they fight werewolves. The book, like pretty much every version of Little Red Riding Hood, has some major sexual undertones; the werewolves are always men, they attack young girls, and they are more likely to attack flirty girls. However, the wolves only ever eat the women, which means that the whole undercurrent is left ignored in the plot. While the plot hangs together well, and the injuries are well described, (you never have unrealistic attacks that result in immediate recovery) I found myself wishing that there were female werewolves, just to make the whole thing a little more interesting. The sisters themselves are very strong, but as one of the reoccurring themes in the book is how they are one person whose heart split in two, you find yourself wondering if that’s why neither sister has much character. An okay book.
