Doodle God

6/10 Game, Discovery, Science Fiction

Doodle God is a fun way to waste time, but only if you have a lot of time. The game consists of matching elements to other elements to make new elements. While it can be entertaining, the game is really repetitive, and the matches can be difficult to figure out. The game is also really time consuming, so play at your own risk! By far my favorite part of the game was the proverbs and quotes that pop up with each element you create. Fun, but not fast, and pretty repetitive. Walk-through recommended!

Edit: A lot of people are looking for the walkthrough to doodle god. It can be found at http://jayisgames.com/archives/2010/06/doodle_god.php !

Sisters Red

6/10 book, YA, fantasy

The plot of Sister’s Red is fairly good. It’s a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, but with some tweaks; it’s set in the modern day, there are two ‘hoods’ and they fight werewolves. The book, like pretty much every version of Little Red Riding Hood, has some major sexual undertones; the werewolves are always men, they attack young girls, and they are more likely to attack flirty girls. However, the wolves only ever eat the women, which means that the whole undercurrent is left ignored in the plot. While the plot hangs together well, and the injuries are well described, (you never have unrealistic attacks that result in immediate recovery) I found myself wishing that there were female werewolves, just to make the whole thing a little more interesting. The sisters themselves are very strong, but as one of the reoccurring themes in the book is how they are one person whose heart split in two, you find yourself wondering if that’s why neither sister has much character. An okay book.

The Tin Soldier

7/10 Game, Older Children, Point and Click

The Tin Soldier is set against a creepy, grey backdrop, similar to that of an old movie. The plot is simple; save the toys that are being terrorized by the jack-in-the-box. The music is truly creepy, and the artwork is brilliantly done, it sends pixelized shivers up your spine. The puzzles in the game can be a lot difficult; not hard by natue, but by design. The game should take about a half-hour to finish, and less if you’re a gaming buff. A fun game, that you should try if you like point-and-clicks.

Missing Abby

6/10 teen, mystery, book

Missing Abby is a mystery book about a young girl, Abby, who goes missing suddenly, and the last one to see her is her old best friend, Emma. Emma and Abby used to be friends, but Emma moved on, both literally and figuratively. As Emma struggles to figure out whether it would be best to forget Abby, and the geekness they share, or try to help Abby, whatever the cost, she realizes that she never truly did move on, or stop missing Abby. Some aspects of the book are great, like when Emma discovers that she loves Dungeons and Dragons, but the overall plot is  little shaky, and has no clear message. At the end of the day, it’s a good book, but not a great book.

9/10 TV, old, teenager

Daria is one of my personal favorites when it comes to television. It isn’t a new series, (it was started in the late 90′s), but it always clever, sarcastic, and a little bitter. Daria is a ‘brain’ a smart high-schooler who doesn’t care much about her appearance or other people’s opinions. She lives with her workaholic mother, her insane father, and her fashionista sister. When Daria moves to Lawndale, she meets Jane, an up-and-coming sarcastic artist, the two of them become friends, and navigate the stupid waters of high-school together. Daria is a show with mild language and some situtaions that kids simply won’t understand, so some kids probably can watch and enjoy the show, and others can’t.

Re-run Season

As many people are aware, summer is the season for re-runs and fall is the season for new series. Don’t ask me why. So, instead of featuring new shows, I’m going to review some of my old favorites and some of my new favorites, and just about everything I can waste my time with. So, keep in mind that these shows have been out there, and you might have seen them. If not, then check them out! You might find a series you’ll really enjoy! The majority of my shows are available online, on sites like Hulu, Netflix Instant Watch, or maybe even on Youtube, (not that I condone the stealing of materials, but come on). These are the only sites I’m recommending right now, and any sites that have any downloads on them are most probably a scam, and should be avoided. This includes the people who put videos on youtube that say the movie can’t be watched, so you should just come on over to this site.

Zombieland

8/10 older teen, movie, fantasy

Zombieland is poetry in motion, a fantastic watch for those out there who love to play zombie games, but don’t have one on hand. The plot is fairly simplistic, but this lends the movie a more clean-cut feel to it, instead of making it boring the simple plot keeps the movie on track. Basically it’s about a reclusive teenager, known only as Columbia, who survives the zombie apocalypse by means of his list of rules, such as “Buckle Up” and “Cardio.” He meets up with Tallahassee, a guy who’s not afraid of… well, anything, and the fun really starts. Along the way they pick up Little Rock and Wichita, go on a quest for a Twinkie, and look for an amusement park fabled to be zombie-free. The movie is a little gory, but buffs of zombie movie will find it tame. The older teen rating comes mostly with the gratuitous use of swearing, so be warned.  A great watch for those looking for a funny horror film.

The Deadly Sister

6/10 book, mystery, teen

The Deadly Sister is a mystery story about, big surprise, two sisters. Abby is the responsible older sister an Maya is a hard partying younger one. When Abby finds a body in the woods, and Maya’s phone nearby, she struggles to hide her sister and find the real killer. Unfortunately  the plot is really predictable, espically near the end, and the characters are a little stiff. An okay read.

Feed Me

7/10 arcade, game, kidsafe

Feed Me is a great game for people who love arcade style. You play a Venus Flytrap who drags itself along the ground via it’s jaws, eating bugs, and attempting to find the exit. The controls can be a bit iffy, and the music can get a little grating, but the bright colors and cheerful weirdness are fabulous. The game is a little old, but is still playable, and the graphics are pretty good. A quick, but fun play. As long as you’re at the site you should check out the other games they have available.

Feed Me is available  at www.nitrome.com
